Above the Great Ice
The Aletsch is the longest glacier in the Alps, a river of ice over twenty kilometres long that comes off the Jungfrau massif and is visible from space. The panorama trail runs the moraine ridge above it, from Bettmerhorn to Moosfluh, the whole frozen sweep curving away below you the entire walk. It is the closest thing in Europe to walking beside a polar ice stream.

Bettmeralp is car free and reached by cable car from Betten in the Rhone valley. A further gondola lifts you to the Bettmerhorn ridge to start the trail high.
The glacier is retreating fast and the ground above it is unstable in places. Stay on the marked moraine path and respect any closures.
