A functional shaping bay can be built in a single-car garage with under 500 dollars of initial investment. The essentials are a shaping rack, a planer, a ventilated glassing area, and a blank storage system that protects foam from heat and humidity.

Set Up Tools

Store and Prepare Blanks
Description: Store foam blanks horizontally on padded racks, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. UV and heat cause pre-cure yellowing in polyurethane foam. Let blanks acclimate to shop temperature for 24 hours before shaping.
Set Up the Glassing Area
Description: Dedicate a separate space for resin work. Install a respirator-rated ventilation fan exhausting to the outside. Use a disposable floor covering. Keep polyester or epoxy resin, catalyst, fiberglass cloth, and squeegees organized and labeled. T

Hang a template board with your standard outline templates
Label all resin containers with mix ratio and purchase date
Your first board will not be perfect. Shape a longboard or funboard before a performance shortboard: more foam means more room for error and more practice time on the planer before you run out of material.
