Cargo Bike Setup for Everyday Errands

Configure a cargo bike as a practical car replacement for grocery runs, school pickup, and everyday errands. The right rack, bag, and weather gear system makes it usable year-round.

Add the Right Racks

A rear rack rated for 25 kg minimum handles most grocery loads. A front low-rider rack adds capacity for bulky items. Use racks with integrated bungee hooks for securing loads without panniers.

Choose Bags and Containers

Ortlieb Back-Roller panniers are waterproof and durable. A large handlebar bag adds quick-access capacity. For kids, a Yepp or Thule child seat mounts to most rear racks rated 25 kg or more.

Prepare for Weather

Fenders are mandatory. Add full-coverage SKS or Crud fenders if the bike did not come with them. Waterproof panniers handle rain automatically. Pogies or bar mitts keep hands warm in winter.

Confirm rear rack weight rating before buying accessories

Install front and rear racks with all bolts torqued to spec

Mount fenders if not already installed

Choose a pannier system and test fit before loading

Install front and rear lights rated for commuting brightness

Add a heavy-duty lock mounted to the frame

Test the fully loaded bike before your first errand run

Install child seat if needed and confirm weight limits

Distribute load evenly between front and rear to maintain steering feel. A heavily loaded rear rack with nothing up front makes a bike feel squirrelly at speed, especially on descents.
