"The simplest effective deodorant has four ingredients. Everything else on the ingredient list is marketing.

How Natural Deodorant Works
Natural deodorant works differently from antiperspirant. Antiperspirant uses aluminum salts to block sweat glands. Natural deodorant neutralizes the bacteria that produce body odor — primarily Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium on the skin — without blocking perspiration. Baking soda creates an alkaline environment hostile to odor-causing bacteria. Arrowroot absorbs moisture. Coconut oil is antimicrobial.

Melt and Combine the Base Ingredients
Gently melt coconut oil, then stir in baking soda and arrowroot.
Melt and Combine the Base Ingredients
Melt 5 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil gently — just until liquid, not hot. Stir in 4 tablespoons of baking soda and 6 tablespoons of arrowroot powder. Mix until completely smooth with no lumps. The ratio of baking soda to arrowroot determines deodorizing strength versus moisture absorption — adjust toward arrowroot if baking soda causes skin irritation.
Add Essential Oils and Pour
Add 10 to 20 drops of essential oils, stir, and pour into a container.
Add Essential Oils and Pour
While still liquid, add 10 to 20 drops of tea tree oil (antimicrobial), lavender, or a combination. Stir well. Pour into a small glass jar or a cardboard deodorant tube lined with parchment. Allow to set at room temperature for 2 to 4 hours, or in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. The mixture will firm as the coconut oil solidifies.
Ingredients
5 tbsp virgin coconut oil
4 tbsp baking soda
6 tbsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch
10 to 20 drops essential oil (tea tree, lavender, or blend)
Glass jar or cardboard deodorant tube for storing
Baking Soda Sensitivity Is Common About 20 to 30% of people experience underarm irritation from baking soda — redness, itching, or a rash — especially if they have just shaved. For sensitive skin, reduce baking soda to 2 tablespoons and increase arrowroot to 8 tablespoons. Magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia) is an effective alternative to baking soda for those who cannot tolerate it.
"It takes two weeks for your skin microbiome to adjust from antiperspirant. The first week will be worse. Persist.
