The Novel That Required a New Way of Reading

I have started Crime and Punishment three times and failed twice because I tried to read it at the pace I read other novels. The third attempt worked because I committed to 20 pages a day and nothing more. Dostoevsky's novel about a student who murders a pawnbroker and then lives inside the psychological aftermath is not a thriller. It is a study in how guilt and rationalization coexist in the same mind and the only pace that captures that is a slow one.
