The Troll's Tongue
Trolltunga is a thin shelf of rock that sticks straight out over the Ringedalsvatnet lake, the fjord water 700 metres directly below. Getting there is a serious full day, a 28 kilometre return trek across high Norwegian plateau with a punishing climb at the start. The reward is one of the most dramatic photo spots on earth, a queue of hikers waiting their turn to stand on the tongue.
The season runs roughly mid June to mid September. Outside it the upper plateau holds snow and a guide is required.
This is a 10 to 12 hour day with no facilities on the trail. Start at dawn, carry food, water and warm layers, and turn back if weather closes in.
