The busiest of the four routes up Mount Fuji, starting from the Subaru Line 5th Station at 2,300 metres and climbing the volcano's north face to the 3,776 metre summit. It is Japan's most climbed mountain trail, lined with huts, torii gates and a sunrise ritual called goraikō that draws hundreds of thousands every summer.
The official climbing season runs early July to mid September, and Yamanashi prefecture now caps daily entries with a paid online reservation, so book before you arrive. Split the climb over two days with a mountain hut booking near the 8th station to acclimatise and time the sunrise.
