The Old Pass

The Gemmi has carried traffic between the Valais and the Bernese Oberland for centuries, a dramatic cleft that the cable car now reaches in minutes from the spa town of Leukerbad. At the top a stark high plateau opens out around the Daubensee, a lake that lies frozen well into summer in a landscape closer to the Arctic than the Alps. The walk to Sunnbüel is gentle and otherworldly.
